I don’t normally trek down to the outer Richmond, unless I’m heading to Oyaji or Shanghai Dumpling King. It’s way out west but cheap Chinese food. They specialize in some things I haven’t been able to find anywhere else: Shanghai dumplings and lions head. The menu also offers a variety of the usual Chinese dishes. We got 2 orders of the dumplings. Now if you’ve been to Joe’s Shanghai in NYC which I believe has the BEST dumplings, these are nothing in comparison but at least the Shanghai King as some juiciness coming out of these dumplings. I grew up eating lions head with a flavorful broth and napa cabbage but we had it braised with a rich gravy. They offer both but I’d say they do the braised one better. It’s basically a giant (and tender) meatball. I’ve had various dishes there as well: mongolian beef, Westlake Soup, 3 cups chicken clay pot, and fried spinach with tofu. All are not bad and the best thing, the average price of each dish is $7. Oh and not to mention, BYOB policy!
It’s pretty far to travel unless you live out there but I think once in a while if you want some warm and cheap Chinese food, Shanghai Dumpling King is a good bet. I think the sure test will be taking my Dad there!
